When Should I Call An Emergency Plumber?

Most people are pretty clear that if they’ve got a leak that can’t be controlled, they need a plumber fast! The challenge for homeowners is to recognise all those other occasions when emergency plumbing support is needed, even if water isn’t pouring out of a burst pipe or tap that won’t switch off. Here we take a look at both the obvious and the less obvious circumstances where calling an emergency plumber is a sensible option.

A Failed Stop Tap

In most cases, if a pipe bursts inside a house, a tap leaks or a washing machine is flooding, it’s possible to temporarily stop the flow of water by turning the water off at the stop tap. Unfortunately, stop taps, like any other part of a plumbing system, can fail. If your stop tap has stuck, or you can’t open the inspection cover to switch the tap off, you need an emergency plumber. We recommend periodically testing whether you can easily access your stop tap, reducing the likelihood you’ll be faced with a flood of water you can’t control.

Water Dripping Through The Electrics

Even a small leak has the potential to become dangerous if it’s dripping through your wiring. If you spot signs of water having contact with your wiring, you need both a plumber, to sort out the leak, and an electrician, to check the wiring is safe to use. In such a situation, it’s best to switch off your power supply until you get the all-clear from the tradies involved.

A Blocked Toilet Or Sink (Sometimes)

If the only toilet you’ve got on your property is blocked, you may well need an emergency plumber. Similarly, if a blocked sink means you’ve no way of washing your hands or dishes, you may need to get the problem sorted out promptly. Whilst properties occupied by an adult or two may be able to manage in the short-term, if you’ve got vulnerable adults or children living there, ensuring they have access to the facilities needed for basic hygiene is a priority.

No Running Water

Householders that have had to turn the water off at the stop tap for some reason, or can’t use the taps on their property due to leaks or failure, need an emergency plumber. Clean, running water is a basic requirement to live safely in any home.

Any Set Of Circumstances That Are Causing You Or Your Family Worry Or Inconvenience

A toilet that makes strange noises whenever it’s flushed may not be an emergency, but if it’s keeping the family awake at night, it’s probably worth calling out an emergency plumber so that everyone can get a good night’s sleep. Similarly, if living with a blocked toilet, even if you’ve got an alternative toilet to use, makes you feel queasy, why suffer? An emergency plumber can be with you quickly to sort the problem out.
